I specialize in serving people who identify as--or have been relegated to statuses as--marginal or alternative, whether in terms of lifestyle, politics, sexual or gender orientation, or learning style--although I draw no line at who and what condition I will treat, so long as I feel competent to do so. I am LGBTQ friendly and knowledgable, interested in and respectful of cultural differences and am more than familiar with an array of physical challenges, grave disabilities, life-threatening illnesses, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and other extreme situations. I welcome diversity in all its manifestations and am open to learn from my clients about any matters.
As part of my practice, I contract with the San Francisco Mental Health Plan (part of Healthy SF) and Foster Care Mental Health. In this way, I can serve San Franciscans without health insurance or the means to pay for therapy on their own. I’ve long devoted a significant part of my practice to children who, through no doing of their own, wind up in this world without the benefit of solid family foundations. As my biographical section illuminates, my longest running specialty is in working with children, adolescents and families in the foster care and adoption systems. I see individual children, sibling groups, biological parents, foster parents and adoptive parents, apart and/or together as needed. I have considerable experience in the realm of special education and have participated in more IEP meetings than I care to count.
Among the skills I bring to a variety of situations is the ability to translate and transcend the jargons of diverse fields and bureaucracies.
For example, I can take the stated therapeutic need from a psychological assessment and turn it into an educational goal. I am familiar with the language and thinking of managed care, and though I am not currently working with any insurance companies, I am not averse to doing so.
I work with all ages of individuals, all kinds of couples and all types of families. I am not averse to seeing different members of families alone at different times and in varying combinations. And because it is often so difficult to get all the members of a family or household into the consulting room at the same time, I find that doing family therapy in the family home is sometimes helpful. I am also willing to do home visits for people with mobility challenges.
